If you are looking for a place steeped with history, rich with outdoor activities, loaded with family oriented fun, if you're looking for a town with extensive relocation opportunities, Wytheville is the place to visit! Conveniently located at the crossroads of Interstate 77 and 81, this small town offers huge potential for visitors looking to relax and have a ton of fun or push their physical limits and stimulate the imagination! Because of its location in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and its central locality to the surrounding multi-state cities, Wytheville is often referred to as "The Hub of Southwest Virginia" and "The Crossroads of the Blue Ridge". We want to show you why Wytheville, Virginia is THE perfect place for your family vacation!
Founded in 1790, Wythe County was named for the first Virginian to sign the Declaration of Independence, the man known as "The Father of American Jurisprudence", George Wythe. Wythe is renowned for being the first professor of law in America. A long, distinguished list of students trained under Wythe and included: Thomas Jefferson, John Marshall and James Monroe. One hundred acres were selected for the county seat in 1792 and Wytheville, then known as Evansham, became the central township of the area. The New River, which at 350 million years old isn't "new" at all, is credited with playing a large hand in the town's rapid early settlement and is enjoyed by natives of Wytheville and visitors alike! The New River is one of the few major rivers in the world which flows south to north and boasts the title of one of the oldest rivers in the world, second only to the Nile River, which also flows south to north. The New River is great for boating, swimming, fishing, and its uncommonly clear water is perfect for snorkeling. What would the mountains of Virginia be without camping? Wythe County offers several different campground facilities. From primitive camping to mountain cabins and RV sites, there are facilities to meet any of your needs. Many include recreational activities such as game rooms, hiking and bicycle trails, pools and seasonal events.
Wytheville and the surrounding area is a "Small Town with a Big Experience". Offering a plethora of attractions, the list of fun things to do seems endless! Begin your trip by stopping by the Regional Visitor's Center located within the city limits and pick up some brochures and maps to the varied entertainment hotspots.
