Rural Retreat Lake

Rural Retreat Lake is a 90-acre impoundment owned by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. A lot of anglers visit the lake to chase after muskellunge or muskie, which are stocked every year. Other fish species found in the lake include northern pike, bluegill, channel catfish, crappie, and bass. A small pond adjacent to the lake is stocked seasonally with trout.

Only electric motors are allowed on the lake. If you don’t have a valid Virginia fishing license you must obtain an access permit in order to utilize the lake and surrounding area. More information on the access permits can be found here, https://www.dgif.virginia.gov/access-permit/.

Rural Retreat Campground, operated by Wythe County Parks and Recreation, is a beautiful shaded campground within walking or biking distance to the lake. Picnic shelters and a playground are located adjacent to the campground.
